This is more of a fanfiction, if anything. The characters and creatures mentioned do not belong to me, but to Valve. Rest assured, it is completely fictional, though there is gore, so read at your own discretion.
Left 4 Creepy
Strange things are a normal in Left 4 Dead. I mean, let's face it. You have a Boomer on the ground that can bile on you while you stand directly above it on the roof of a house, or that can bile through a closed door. There are times when you kill a Hunter, yet blood continues to explode from your leg. There are even moments where Tanks start hopping like bunnies, or Smokers can shoot their tongues through closed doors that were never open, making you wonder how it knew you were there, or how its tongue burst through a metal door.
But one day in October, I saw something that confused me. While playing by myself, fighting off a horde with my AI teammates, I spotted something in the back from my placement atop a car. It was an infected wearing a straight jacket, stumbling around amongst the common infected like some drunken loon. I immediately thought back to when I was listening to the game's commentary mode, and realized that what I was seeing was the Screamer.
But that couldn't be possible, as the Screamer had never actually been added to the game. I took aim for its head and fired, though instead of the supposed Screamer collapsing in death, it turned straight toward me, no longer moving and just staring.
I began feeling uneasy, and glanced around to see if there was anyone else in the room to confirm what I was seeing, though I found myself ultimately alone. I turned my attention back to the TV screen, only to be further confused when the Screamer was gone.
After two more shots, the horde had been wiped out. I turned around to rejoin my team, and found myself face-to-face with the Screamer, jaw open wide like a Spitter's from the sequel. I began shooting widely at it, backing up as quick as possible, but it just stood there, not even responding. Although my bullets were flying right at it, no blood spewed, no sound came from the Screamer at all. My AI teammates began yelling at me to get in the saferoom and shut the door, making me realize that the AIs couldn't see it, thus meaning that the game wasn't registering its presence at all. It made sense, really, since the Screamer wasn't supposed to have been in the game, period.
As soon I stopped shooting, it jumped up into the air and disappeared when I tried to watch it. When I lowered my view again, there was the Screamer, directly in front of me again, its mouth stretched out in a contorted, open-mouthed, toothy grin. It seemed to be grinning right at me, not Zoey, who I was playing.
Before I could do anything, I had died without it ever actually touching me, or attacking at all. As the camera zoomed out to show my body, I saw that Zoey's torso had been graphically ripped open, blood all over her, which bothered me greatly, since Left 4 Dead doesn't have graphics like that. Then I took a closer look at the body as I noticed that the outfit didn't look like Zoey's. In fact...
I felt the need to puke, but didn't, as it dawned on me that "Zoey" was wearing the same outfit I was at that moment. Her hair wasn't long and in a ponytail anymore, but down and to her shoulders like mine. As the game finally cut out, I heard a maniacal laughter that I could only place as being the Screamer's since the Jockey doesn't exist in the first game.
That night, having forgotten about the game by hanging out with my friends, I was slowly drifting off to sleep, facing the wall beside my bed, when I suddenly heard a quiet, but clearly insane, chuckle from right behind me. He wasn't finished with me...
